day of prayer | Events in the Valley


The National Day of Prayer will be observed Thursday at various sites in the Valley on the theme “One Nation, United in Prayer.” The tradition of the event originated with the Continental Congress in 1775. In 1988, the day was legislated by Congress and signed by President Ronald Reagan. The observances focus on seven points of prayer. They are government, military, media, business, education, church and family.

Girard: The “Girard Prays” event by Girard Ministerial Association will start at 3 p.m. with the processional cross at Trinity Lutheran Church, 78 E. Liberty St. Participants will walk to significant locations in the city including the police and fire stations, Emmanuel Care Center, day-care centers and Veterans Memorial. Pastor Rhonda Gallagher of Trinity said the event is about “prayer, unity and community." The event will conclude with fellowship and a potluck community meal and music by Door3Twenty, a Christian band from Canton, at Trinity Lutheran. Hubbard: Hubbard Christians in Action will meet at noon at Tylee Park. A salad luncheon will follow at Central Christian Church.

Salem: Salem National Day of Prayer Committee has organized a gathering at noon on the Village Green at the Salem Chamber of Commerce building, corner of State and Lincoln streets. The 50-minute program will include presentation of flags, proclamation by the mayor, patriotic music, Scripture and prayers by clergy and lay people.

Youngstown: Youngstown City and Regional Pray Team will host a gathering at noon on the plaza with several clergy speakers who will focus on various prayer topics and there will be music.
