2 inmates moved to Mahoning Co. jail

YOUNGSTOWN

Two of the Trumbull CountyJail inmates involved in the hostage-taking of a corrections officer Wednesday have been transported from the Ohio State Penitentiary to the Mahoning County jail.

Jail officials confirmed Friday that David Martin and Richard Ware are in the facility. Martin, 29, of Cleveland, is not due back in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court for another hearing in his aggravated murder case until May 20. Ware, 27, of Warren, is due back in court Monday on one of his aggravated-robbery cases.

The third man, Kevin Johns, 24, of Cincinnati, is at the Lorain Correctional Institution, where he is beginning to serve a 28-year sentence for rape and kidnapping.

The three took corrections officer Joe Lynn hostage at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday and gave themselves up at 8:30 p.m. No one was injured.

‘Meatout’ planned

“The Great American Meatout” is coming to the Evergreen Seventh-day Adventist Church, 7668 Glenwood Ave., from 2 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday.

Dr. James Krystosik, radio talk-show host of “The Other Side of Medicine,” will be a guest speaker at the event, which also includes a vegan dinner, free blood-pressure screenings, free drawing for door prizes and free child care.

Tickets at the door are $18 for adults and $13 for children under 12. There is limited seating.

NAACP scholarship luncheon planned

Youngstown Unit 3207 of the NAACP will host its annual scholarship luncheon, “Freedom Under Fire,” at 11 a.m. next Saturday at Third Baptist Church, 1177 Parkhill Drive. Keynote speaker will be the Rev. William J. Blake, director of Student Diversity at Youngstown State University and pastor of First Baptist Church in Windham. The cost is $20. Autism Awareness walk set for today

HOWLAND

National Honor Society students at Howland High School are hosting a walk in celebration of Autism Awareness Month to benefit The Rich Center for Autism from noon to 4 p.m. today at Howland Township Park, 2000 Rosegarden Drive.

Event organizer and Howland High School student Marissa Jocola says: “We have over 115 walkers registered and expect more people to show up on Saturday. ... We are looking forward to a great day and [an] amazing show of support for The Rich Center.”

The students have organized the entire event and solicited donations and corporate support from partners such as Covelli Enterprises, Mocha House of Warren, Pizza Works and AVI Foodsystems.

Landfill open

NEW SPRINGFIELD

The Waste Management landfill, 3510 E. Garfield Road, will be open to Springfield Township residents to drop off materials free of charge from 9 a.m. to noon today.
