Bonding with babies and books

Caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months are invited to the Boardman library May 2 and 16 at 10 a.m. for 20 minutes of language enrichment, including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Learn Internet safety

Card castles

Children of all ages are invited to the Boardman library May 22 at 7 p.m. to build a house of cards. Card houses will be on display during the month of May. There will be stories and games. Preschoolers must attend with an adult.

Celebrate Maurice Sendak at the library

Children ages 4-5 who are accompanied by an adult are invited to the Boardman library May 13 at 10 a.m. to hear the story “Where the Wild Things Are” and join in other fun activities.

Sensory story time

Join the Boardman library May 24 at 2 p.m. for family story time with a sensory focus.

This program is designed for children of all ages with different needs, including those with autism, speech and language delays, cognitive impairments, ADHD and other special needs and challenges. There will be books, music and sensory stations with a schedule board and double visuals.

Youngstown Playhouse special event

Join the Boardman library May 24 at 10 a.m. as the Youngstown Playhouse does a special presentation for the upcoming play, “The Wiz.” Families and children of all ages are invited to attend. The event will include a special prize drawing for tickets to the Playhouse’s performances of “The Wiz.”

Make a beaded sun catcher

Come to the Boardman library May 15 at 7 p.m. to make a beaded sun catcher. Call 330-744-8636 and ask for the Boardman library to register and request a supply list. Sun catchers will be on display at the library during the month of May.

Teen Advisory Board meeting

Teens in grades 7-12 are invited to the Boardman library May 7 at 6:30 p.m. to check out the monthly Teen Advisory Board meeting. Meetings take place the first Wednesday of the month at the Boardman library. Help plan and support teen activities and meet new people. Newcomers are always welcome.

It’s all about yarn

The seventh- and eigth-grade classes of St. Charles had their annual Relay for Life volleyball tournament fundraiser March 21.

Boardman Park to offer babysitting class

Boardman Park is sponsoring a babysitting class May 3 at the Georgeanna Parker Activity Center in Boardman Park. The class is for 11-15 year-olds and will be from 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. The class is $40 for Boardman residents and $50 for non-residents. Students will learn babysitting basic skills, first aid, rescue breathing and much more. Students need to provide their own lunch. Classes are limited. The Ursuline Center announces 2014 guided labyrinth walks

The Ursuline Center, located at 4280 Shields Road, will begin its 2014 guided labyrinth walk season April 27 (weather permitting) with a short presentation on the Spirituality of Labyrinths at 2 p.m. in the center and a guided walk immediately following. This year the center is offering a series of themed walks. On April 27 at 2 p.m., the walk will be “On the Path to Rebirth,” on May 13 at 6:30 p.m. the walk will be “On the Path to Healing,” on June 19 at 6:30 p.m. the walk will be “On the Path to Emancipation: Freedom of Mind, Body and Spirit” in correlation with the Juneteenth holiday, on July 15 at 6:30 p.m., the walk will be “On the Path to Growing,” on Aug. 14 at 6:30 p.m., the walk will be “On the Path to Accepting,” on Sept. 16, 6:30 p.m., the walk will be “On the Path to Peace” and on Oct. 12 at 2 p.m., the walk will be “On the Path to Awareness” (presentation on Spirituality of Labyrinths in the center).

All people of faith are invited to attend, whether they are new to or experienced with walking a labyrinth. Walking the labyrinth usually takes about 20 minutes. People wishing to experience the Labyrinth but unable to make one of the guided walks can come anytime at their own convenience. There are printed guides that give suggestions for following the path provided at the Labyrinth’s entrance, but there is no right or wrong way to experience the sacred walk. People can use the labyrinth in any way they need. The Ursuline Center Labyrinth is a ministry of the Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown and open year-round from dawn to dusk for all persons of faith. Gamblers Anonymous to meet

Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Cornersburg. Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend. For more information, call 330-505-5060.

Scholarship deadline to be June 1

Kite festival

Come to MetroParks Farm May 3 from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. for the kite festival presented by WFMJ/WBCB. Members of the Ohio Society for the Elevation of Kites and Fly Pittsburgh will brighten the skies with expert kite flying and ingenious designs. Bring your own kites to share and participate in kite flying activities and contests. A Create-a-Kite workshop will be offered inside McMahon Hall for a small fee. Registration not required.

National Public Gardens Day

National Public Gardens Day is an annual celebration of the nation’s public gardens to raise awareness of the important role botanical gardens and arboreta play in promoting environmental stewardship, plant and water conservation, green spaces and plant education in communities nationwide. In the Mahoning Valley this celebration takes place locally at Fellows Riverside Gardens May 9 from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Visitors to the gardens will find many activities to participate in throughout the day. Enjoy peak spring blooms, approximately 72,600 flowering bulbs. Registration not required.

Fitness Together 5k run and walk

Come to the Wick Recreation Area May 10 from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. for Fitness Together’s 5k walk and run. Fitness Together has dedicated the proceeds from this event to help support the completion of the new children’s playground at Wick Recreation Area. It is the goal of Fitness Together to provide local children with a fun, healthy and safe place to get outdoors and play. This event is an opportunity for people of all ages and abilities to have a good time and support a great cause. Whether you are a veteran racer, a first time participant or someone who would prefer to walk while socializing with friends and family, you are welcome. Girls night out at the gardens

Shop the latest fashions and merchandise at Fellows Riverside Gardens annual fundraising event May 20 and 21 from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Friends of Fellows Riverside Gardens members receive a 20 percent discount on merchandise from The shop in the gardens, non-members receive 10 percent. Visit specialty vendors, then enjoy a meal by Cater 2U, garden container demonstrations and more. Raffles and auctions will take place. Registration required. The fee is $30 and includes dinner. Mother’s Day trolley tours

To celebrate Mother’s Day, enjoy a 45 minute ride through Mill Creek MetroParks on the Cohasset Express May 11. Mother’s Day hike

Moms and their children are invited to celebrate Mother’s Day May 11 from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. with a morning hike followed by homemade waffles. Meet at Pioneer Pavilion. Moderate rating, 2 miles. Call Ford Nature Center to register. Registration and payment required by May 9. $5 R, $6 NR.

iNaturalist hike

Meet at Ford Nature Center May 18 from 2-4 p.m. to hike around Lake Cohasset to observe wildlife and record observations on a new citizen science project website called iNaturalist.org. This will be an ongoing project to monitor Mill Creek MetroParks’ biodiversity and the public is encouraged to participate. After the hike, there will be a short introduction to the website and a demonstration on how to log observations. Moderate rating, 2.5 miles.

Voices of the night hike

Meet at Vikers Nature Preserve on May 23 from 8:30-10 p.m. to listen to a serenade of frogs. There will also be an opportunity catch, observe and then release frogs. Wear boots and bring flashlights. Easy rating, 1 mile.

Bluebird hike

Meet at MetroParks Farm May 25 from 2-4 p.m. to learn about bluebirds and how their numbers have slowly increased as you hike Bluebird Trail and check some nest boxes. Moderate, 1.5 or 2.5 miles.

Recreational hikes

There will be a series of volunteer-led, recreational hikes. These hikes are generally faster paced and focus on exercising in the outdoors. Meet at Ford Nature Center May 7 at 9 a.m. for a moderate four mile walk. Meet at the Golf Course overflow parking lot (off of West Golf Drive) May 13 at 6 p.m. for an east one or three mile hike. Meet at MetroParks Bikeway Trailhead at MetroPakrs Farm May 21 at 9 a.m. for an easy two or four mile walk. Meet at MetroParks Bikeway Trail Head at Kirk Road May 27 at 6 p.m. for a moderate two or four mile hike.

Banding the baby falcons

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources’ Division of Wildlife hopes to have newly hatched peregrine falcons to band and the public is invited to watch. If you would like to attend this special activity, which will take place downtown on a week day, Ford Nature Center will keep a contact list. As soon as ODNR-DOW gives the details, you will be contacted with the date and time.

Bird walks

Naturalist Emeritus Bill Whitehouse will lead bird walks May 3 and May 10 from 8-10 a.m. at Ford Nature Center. Each week, you will drive to the best park location for birds.

Bird sanctuary walk

Jeff Harvey of Wild Birds Unlimited will lead a walk at the Mill Creek Wildlife Sanctuary May 17 from 8-9:30 a.m. Boots are required. Registration is required at Ford Nature Center by May 16.

Falcon watch

Peregrine falcons, an endangered species, have been nesting in downtown Youngstown for a decade. Travel downtown on the MetroParks trolley to try and catch a glimpse of them May 14 from 12 or 1 until 2 p.m. Boards at Ford Nature Center. Bring binoculars. Down the rabbit hole

Children ages 3-5 who are accompanied by an adult are invited to Fellows Riverside Gardens May 17 from 10-11 a.m. to follow Alice’s white rabbit and learn about his favorite plant and carrots. Children will make a healthy rabbit salad and plant carrot seeds. Registration required. There is a $5 fee.

Queen of Heart’s tarts

Children ages 6-11 who are accompanied by an adult are invited to Fellows Riverside Gardens May 17 from 12:30-1:30 p.m. to learn how to make their own strawberry tarts, sample tarts already made and hear more about the Queen of Hearts and her court. Registration required. There is a $5 fee.

Stroller walk

Come to Ford Nature Center May 24 from 10-10:45 a.m. to learn to connect yourself and your child to nature. Enjoy a short guided walk, a specially designed sensory hike for children in strollers.

Plant spirals

Come to Fellows Riverside Gardens May 31 from 3-4 p.m. to explore spiral patterns, Fibonacci numbers and the Plant Spiral exhibit all the while participating in hands-on activities. Registration required. There is a $5 fee.

Family garden Fridays

Come to Fellows Riverside Gardens Fridays starting May 9 until Oct. 17 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. to take part in drop-in activities in the family garden. Watch as the garden grows with characters from “Alice in Wonderland” and Wonderland-like plants. Learn about garden creatures, tools and how to care for a garden. Take part in making garden treats, listening to stories, children’s yoga and adventuring with Alice and her friends.

Mother’s Day at MetroParks Farm

Come to MetroParks Farm May 10 from 10 a.m until 1 p.m. to help mom celebrate her special day. Visit with mommy farm animals and their babies. Goat day at MetroParks Farm

Join the Mahoning County Goat Club at MetroParks Farm May 18 from 3-5 p.m. as they take over the farm for the afternoon. Learn how these critters are handled, try some goat milk fudge, register for a soap making demonstration or make a special goat craft. Small fee per station.

Guided tractor wagon rides

Join MetroParks Farm May 25 from 1-4 p.m. to see how spring planting has progressed for the season. The barns will be open and a children’s craft will be available. Donations accepted for wagon rides. Craft fee is $1.

Loose knit group

Dog body language workshop

Picnic at Pioneer Pavilion

Come to Fellows Riverside Gardens in the Melnick Museum through December 2014 for the “Through the Lens” exhibit. The exhibit displays a rare collection of glass negatives and acetate film negatives produced by two local photographers which chronicle scenes of Mill Creek Park from 1907-1926. Several portrait negatives of the period also on display.

Garden adventure

Come to Fellows Riverside Gardens June 7 from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. for a day of “Alice in Wonderland” adventure in the gardens. Meet the Queen of Hearts, drink tea like the Mad Hatter, join in making music and a variety of hands-on activities with organizations, including Youngstown State University, The Green Team, The Audubon Society and more. Wild With Style Art Show seeking entries

Amateur artists of all ages may submit artwork for display. Entries will be accepted at Ford Nature Center starting May 24 until June 1. Subject must be inspired by local nature of Mill Creek MetroParks. Call Ford Nature Center for information about entry limits, size, and display modes. Show displayed at Lanterman’s Mill from June 14 until June 22.

Nicotine Anonymous to meet on Wednesdays

Nicotine Anonymous is a fellowship of individuals from every walk of life who meets every Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Wickliffe Presbyterian Church, located at 45 Idlewood Road in Austintown, to solve their common problem - an addiction to nicotine. The group is based on the twelve steps of Alcoholics Anonymous and the only requirement to join is a desire to stop using nicotine. Cardinal 5K Donut Run

The Canfield Athletic Booster Club will be hosting the Cardinal 5K Donut Run May 26 at 11 a.m., with registration at 10 a.m., at Cardinal Stadium. All proceeds go to the athletic programs of the Canfield Cardinals. Runners will receive a Cardinal dry-fit t-shirt. The fee is $25. Make checks payable to Canfield Athletic Booster Club and send them to the Canfield High School athletic office, located at 100 Cardinal Drive. There will also be a Munchkin Run; those ten years of age and under are free. You may register as a team or an individual. Runners participate at their own risk.

Couch to 5K to begin May 20

The Ohio Naturopathic Wellness Center will present its third annual Couch to 5K program beginning May 20. There will be a free informational seminar on the program, given by Dr. Ted Suzelis, N.D., May 8 at 6:30 p.m. at his Boardman office, located in SouthBridge West (behind Second Sole) at 755 Boardman-Canfield Road, Suite D-3. BUMC to host Trash and Treasure Sale

Marge Hartman’s Paws Town at Boardman Park

Boardman Twp. Park and Marge Hartman’s Paws Town, a volunteer -non-profit organization, have partnered to create Boardman’s first dog park. Thanks to a large gift from the Marge Hartman Foundation, and the fund raising efforts of Paws Town, INC. organization, the Marge Hartman’s Paws Town Dog Park is open and accepting membership applications. Memberships will be good for one year from April 1 until March 31, 2015. Membership fees will not be prorated. Memberships for Boardman residents will be $40 for one dog and $10 for each additional dog. Non-Boardman resident fee will be $65 for one dog and $10 for each additional dog. Membership packets may be picked up at the Boardman Park Office, in the outdoor literature boxes at the Dog Park, or online at boardmanpark.com. Beginning April 1, everyone using Paws Town Dog Park must have a membership in order to ensure that all dogs are healthy and vaccinated. New members will be given a code to enter the dog park and they will also be issued a badge to wear.

ODNR boating safety class

Lanterman’s Mill hours

Lanterman’s Mill will be having limited hours beginning April 5 on Saturdays and Sundays only from 12-4 p.m. with full hours beginning May 1. Full hours will be Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. and closed on Mondays.

Boy Scout Earth Day clean up

Organic composting course

Come to Fellows Riverside Gardens April 26 and 30, and May 3 and 7 (Saturdays 10-2:30 p.m. and Wednesdays 4-8 p.m.) to join Grow Youngstown as they cover feedstocks relative to goals and availability, key temperatures, management necessary to keep aerobic conditions, a variety of static composting options and National Organic Standards management for organic compost. Scent games

This seminar, presented by The Learning Dog, will work on your dog’s natural ability to use their strongest skill: scent. Come to Fellows Riverside Gardens on April 26 from 3-4 p.m. to learn how to make a variety of seed crafts from seed paper to seed bombs for that special someone. This event is for ages 12-17 and the fee is $8.

Come to Mill Creek Park April 19, 27 and May 4 from 2-4 p.m. for a series of walks to witness the progression of early blooming wildflowers. April 19 meets at Newport Wetlands and will be a moderate rating of 2 miles. April 27 meets at Yellow Creek Park. Wear boots for possible creek crossings. This hike will be a moderate rating of 2 miles. May 4 meets at Poland Woods, located off Route 170 in Poland. This hike will be an easy rating of 2 miles.

Voices of the night

Birdsong fills the days of springtime and frogsong fills the nights. Meet at Vickers Nature Preserve April 26 from 8-9:30 p.m. to listen to the serenade. Catch, observe and then release frogs. Flashlights permitted and boots required. This hike is an easy rating of 1 mile.

Amy Stewart and The Drunken Botanist Lecture

Join author Amy Stewart at Fellows Riverside Gardens May 1 from 7-8 p.m. for her lecture on “The Drunken Botanist: The Plants That Create the World’s Great Drinks” brought to you by the Andrews Memorial Lecture Series. Explore the array of plants that humans have contrived to transform into alcohol. Enjoy a small dessert afterward. Registration required. The fee is $25 or $20 for Friends of Fellows Riverside Gardens members. For an additional fee, meet Amy Stewart at a reception before the lecture starting at 6 p.m. There will be hors d’oeuvres from Cater 2 U, wine, beer and two botanical cocktails to sample. Kite festival

Come to MetroParks Farm May 3 from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. as members of the Ohio Society for the Elevation of Kites and Fly Pittsburgh brighten the skies with expert kite flying and designs. Bring your own kites to participate in kite flying activities and contests. A Create-a-Kite workshop will be offered inside McMahon Hall for a small fee. Call Ford Nature Center for details.

Fitness Together 5k

This walk/run event is for people of all ages and abilities. St. Charles School registration

Registration for children entering St. Charles for the 2014-2015 school year is taking place now. The following materials are needed to complete registration: copy of birth certificate, copy of baptismal certificate (if Catholic) and immunization records. Effective Fall 2011, Ohio law now requires that every kindergarten or first-grade student entering school must have two varicella/chicken pox as well as the other required immunizations by day 14 of school or they cannot attend until up-to-date. Grades 4-6 students need only one varicella. Grade 7 students need Tdap or Td booster. A Social Security number and $25 non-refundable registration fee is also required. Checks can be made payable to Lumen Christi Catholic Schools. Proof of child custody (if applicable), and a copy of the child’s last report card from previous school must be provided for grades 1-8 only. The registration application takes about 10-15 minutes to fill out with basic information, including work addresses and phone numbers.

Boardman Local Schools announce 2014/2015 kindergarten registration

The Boardman Local School District is now offering kindergarten registration for the 2014-2015 school year. Any parent who is a Boardman resident interested in signing their child up for kindergarten may visit the elementary school they wish their child to attend to pick up registration forms. Requirements for registration are: the child must be five years of age on or before Aug. 1, the registration form must be completed, the original birth certificate must be supplied, proof of residency in at least two forms (tax statement, utility bill, purchase/rental agreement) as well as a residency affidavit, custody papers if applicable and payment of $25 to partially cover supply costs furnished by the school. T’ai Chi course

Join Marie Lew Thursdays in March and April and May 1 and 8 at Fellows Riverside Gardens for a ten-week course that includes warm-ups, breathing exercises and instruction in the first steps of a complete classic Chen T’ai Chi form. It is designed for beginners with little or no previous background in this art of energy balancing.

Taken as a whole, this course will ground the student in the basic principles of movement and the meaning behind the movements while developing coordination, strength and flexibility.

Registration required. The fee is $100; 10 percent discount ($90) if registered by March 1.

Short term host family opportunities available through 4-H

Mahoning, Columbiana, Portage, and Trumbull County families will have the opportunity to welcome a young person from Japan into their home for one month this year, as part of an international exchange program being offered by the County OSU Extension, 4-H. Statewide, host families are needed for 100 Japanese youngsters (aged 12-18) and their adult chaperones, who will visit Ohio from July 23 through Aug. 18.

Host families provide the exchangees with room and board and a chance to experience daily life in America. Families are urged not to alter their daily routines or lifestyles during their visitor’s stay. Exchangees provide their own spending money, and the sponsoring organization furnishes comprehensive medical insurance. All types of families are welcome to apply to become hosts, including urban, rural, single-parent, childless, and non-4-H families. The only requirements are that for the Japanese month-long exchange, hosts must have a family member of the same gender and approximate age of the exchangee, three meals a day, and a separate bed for the visitor.
