Elderly woman dies in house fire; son hospitalized

A elderly woman died in a 5 a.m. house fire on Pegotty Drive Northeast in the Howland Glen neighborhood today.

The woman, believed to be in her 80s, and a male believed to be in his 50s and her son, were removed by firefighters. The woman was pronounced dead at ValleyCare Trumbull Memorial Hospital. The male was taken to Akron Children’s Hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation.

Smoke detectors were sounding when firefighters arrived.

Howland Fire Chief James Pantalone said the fire was contained to one “fairly small area,” but there was a great deal of smoke.

The woman was found in a bedroom, the male in a hallway. The most serious injury for both appeared to be smoke inhalation. Their identifities were not being released.

The Howland Fire Department was assisted by several nearby fire departments.
