Jessica Jones of Canfield has qualified to Level 10 USA Gymnastics national team competition in Jackson, Miss., on May 9. Jones qualified to this competition last weekend by competing in the Regional qualifier in Lansing, Mich. She placed second in her age group to qualify for the Senior B National Team, one of just nine gymnasts from Ohio to qualify for a national team.

Jones, who began gymnastics at the age of 3 and her competitive career at 8, is a level 10 gymnast, the top level in the Junior Olympic USA gymnastics program. Jones, a junior at Canfield High, has verbally accepted a scholarship offer from the Penn State gymnastics program.

Akron’s Testa wins local bowling event

NEW CASTLE, PA.

Akron native Frank Testa took top honors at the 13th annual Mickey Michalojko Memorial scratch bowling tournament at Colonial Lanes. The event drew 110 bowlers from five state and Canada competing for a first prize of more than $2,200.

Testa averaged 222 for the four games of qualifying then posted games of 255 and 254 for a finals pin total of 509. Second place went to 2012 champion Bob Bures Sr. of Mentor with a 493 and Brett Spangler of Niles finished third.

Proceeds from the event, sponsored by Pizza Joe’s, will go toward the scholarship fund in Michalojko’s name.

Boardman’s Strauss honored by OHSBCA

The longtime Boardman basketball scorekeeper Ed Strauss will be presented with a Hall of Honor Award from the Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Association at this month’s North-South All-Star Game.

He will receive a plaque for his exemplary service to high school basketball over the years.

Strauss will be among 15 honorees at the game on Sunday at Ohio Dominican University.

YMCA tees it up for 86th golf season

There’s still time to sign your team up for the 86th season of the YMCA Golf League.

It’s the oldest league in the valley, started in 1929, and golfers of all skill levels are welcome to join in the tradition. The league plays at Mill Creek Golf Course on Tuesday nights, beginning May 6. Teams of four must register by April 30. Phantoms sign defenseman to tender

The Phantoms have signed defenseman Ty Farmer to a USHL tender, Youngstown head coach and general manager Anthony Noreen announced. The tender is for the 2014-15 season, and it will take the place of the Phantoms’ first-round selection in the 2014 USHL Phase One draft, which is scheduled for May 5.

Farmer, 16, is a native of O’Fallon, Missouri. He skated last season for the St. Louis AAA Blues U16, where he recorded 12 points (two goals, 10 assists) over 31 games in the Tier 1 League regular season. The defenseman (5-10, 176) is committed to attend Michigan State University following his USHL career.

Seahawks acquire QB Pryor from Oakland

ALAMEDA, Calif.

The Oakland Raiders dealt quarterback Terrelle Pryor to the Seattle Seahawks on Monday for a seventh-round pick in next month’s draft. The Raiders fulfilled Pryor’s wish to be traded a day before the start of their offseason program. Pryor will compete with Tarvaris Jackson and B.J. Daniels for the backup job to Russell Wilson in Seattle.
