1649: The Maryland Toleration Act, providing for freedom of worship for all Christians, is passed by the Maryland assembly.

1789: John Adams is sworn in as the first vice president of the United States.

1836: An army of Texans led by Sam Houston defeats the Mexicans at San Jacinto, assuring Texas independence.

1910: Author Samuel Langhorne Clemens, better known as Mark Twain, dies in Redding, Conn., at age 74.

1914: U.S. military forces occupy the Mexican port of Veracruz at the order of President Woodrow Wilson; the occupation lasted until the following November.

1918: Baron Manfred von Richthofen, the German ace known as the “Red Baron,” is killed in action during World War I.

1989: A donation of $500,000 from the William G. Lyden Jr. family brings Youngstown State University halfway to its $1 million fund-raising campaign for student housing.

Youngstown Mayor Patrick J. Ungaro isn’t taking any chances in his bid for the Democratic nomination for another term; he’s outspending his rivals, Michael Crogan and former Mayor Frank R. Franko, 2-to-1.

1974: Youngstown State University trustees approve a record operating budget of $23.3 million for 1974-75, an increase of $1.4 million over a year earlier.

1939: Jack Siverling, 14, of 241 S. Garland Ave., is chosen the winner in a contest to find a local look-alike for the boy in a national Community Chest poster. Jack will receive a two-week camping trip at Camp Fitch.

Youngstown district rail-road traffic has been sharply curtailed because of a coal strike, costing scores of local railroaders to be laid off.
