With the success of the “Divergent” book series by Veronica Roth and the just-released movie, Poland library hosted an event March 20 for teenage fans of the series in grades 7-12, put on by the library’s Teen Xtreme Team.
“We’ve been having parties here for almost all of the book series that go as movies,” said library teen specialist Cindy Beach. “This gets them interested in the books they haven’t actually read. It’s something fun for them to do. They can discover what the library has for them.”
Beach said that 21 teens had registered for the event, although approximately 30 ended up attending.
In addition to various stations that implemented factions from the book series, there was pizza, chips, fruit, soda and water as refreshments. After completing each station, the teens earned ink stamps on their arms and were able to put their names into bags in which the winning name would receive various prizes from the book series. They could also register their names to win movie money to see the film for free and posters from the movie were raffled off as well.
The stations were a craft station where the teens made rainbow loom bracelets, an Erudite faction station that tested their trivia knowledge of the book series, an Abnegation station where they made cards to send to the elderly for Easter, an Amity station where they met other teens in the room and found out more about them, a Dauntless station where they learned trust by practicing trust falls in the middle of the room and a Candor station where they told true things about themselves.
Chelsea Kilgore attended the event with her twin sister, Erin. She said she has read all three books in the Divergent series.
“I’m a fan of the books and I’m going to see the movie tonight,” she said. “I really love the theme of it and the characters. I really like it and the series just finished. I read the whole thing and liked it.”
