Pa. prison locked down after guard stabbed

DALLAS, Pa. (AP) — A northeastern Pennsylvania prison remains on lockdown after the stabbing of a correctional officer.

Officials from the State Correctional Institution at Dallas said today that the guard was stabbed around 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

The prison in Luzerne County said the inmate was leaving a housing unit and while passing two officers sitting at a desk, used a homemade weapon to assault one of them.

The inmate was immediately captured and restrained. He is serving a life sentence and has been at the medium-security prison since 1996.

The injured guard walked himself to the infirmary for treatment and was later transported to a hospital. He was treated and released.

The inmate was transferred to another state prison. His name wasn’t released.
