3 Saturday events to honor victim, child

WARREN

Three events will take place Saturday to remember Richard Rollison IV on his 25th birthday. Rollison was shot to death last October.

First will be a Stop The Violence motorcycle ride starting at noon at the Boogie Down Club, 2382 W. Market Street.

Next will be an Easter egg hunt from 3 to 6 p.m. in Quinby Park on Austin Avenue Southwest.

Third will be a Rest In Peace birthday party at 9 p.m. at the Buckeye Elks Club, 421 North Ave., Youngstown. All proceeds will benefit Rollison’s unborn child, said Richard Rollison III.

Annual daffodil show at Fellows Gardens

The 2014 Fellows Riverside Gardens Daffodil Show is Saturday and Sunday.

The American Daffodil Society Midwest Region Show, presented by Mill Creek MetroParks’ Fellows Riverside Gardens, 123 McKinley Ave., is one of more than 40 society shows that take place this spring throughout the United States.

Entries for the general public will be accepted Saturday until 10 a.m. The show will open Saturday for public viewing at 1 p.m. followed by judging. The show will remain open until 5 p.m. Show hours Sunday are 1 to 5 p.m.

This year will mark the sixth year that a special class will feature entries of Narcissus “Fellows Favorite,” a daffodil cultivar named for Fellows Riverside Gardens.

Inspiring Minds raises $74,000 at gala event

Last Saturday’s gala for Inspiring Minds raised more than $74,000 to aid the organization’s work with under-represented youth to empower them through education and new experiences.

The gala was sold out with more than 500 people in attendance, and organizers are planning to find a larger venue for next year’s event.

New siren downtown

YOUNGSTOWN

A new outdoor emergency-warning siren has been installed on the Mahoning County jail to serve the city’s downtown and Youngstown State University areas, bringing the county’s total number of emergency sirens to 52, Dennis O’Hara, county interim emergency management director, told the county commissioners Thursday.

The sirens in the system sound for one minute in a noon test every Saturday.

The public is urged to call the county’s emergency management agency at 330-740-2200 to report any sirens that fail to sound during these tests.

Security company owner indicted

American Sentry and Delta Elite, two Howland-based security companies run by Gregory A. Oakes of Howland Springs Road in Howland, are not licensed with the Ohio Department of Public Safety to operate as security companies, according to the ODPS.

American Sentry had lost its business license through the Ohio Secretary of State’s Office in April 2011 for failure to pay state taxes or file state tax reports, but the license was reinstated in January 2014.

Delta Elite lost its business license through the Ohio Secretary of State in January 2007 for failing to pay state taxes or file state tax reports. That license was not reinstated.

Oakes was indicted this week by a Trumbull County grand jury on 10 counts of forgery and 10 counts of tampering with records for purportedly operating the companies after he had lost his licenses to operate because of failing to pay taxes.

State fire officials seeking arson info

SALEM

The state fire marshal’s office is seeking the public’s help in catching the arsonist it says torched a home at 654 E. Third St. at about 11:30 p.m. March 15.

State Fire Marshal Larry Flowers said authorities want to hear from anyone who saw anything unusual around the time of the fire or “may have heard someone speaking about the fire with an unusual level of interest or knowledge.”

Anyone with information is asked to call Salem police at 330-337-7811 or the state fire marshal at 800-589-2728. A reward of up to $5,000 is being offered for information leading to the identification of the arsonist.
