Council is ready to vote on accepting a bid to build five soccer fields at Liberty Park.

“We recommended it Monday night, and council brought in legislation for the next meeting,” Mayor Jim Melfi said Wednesday.

The lowest of nine bidders on the project was Curtis Crump Excavating of Hubbard at $95,999, he said.

“It’s been a project we’ve been talking about for five years,” Melfi said.

He said he hopes council passes the legislation at its upcoming meeting Monday “so we can get going on construction.”

The plan includes three small fields for small kids and two larger fields.

Melfi said the city, schools and the Girard Soccer Association will share in the costs of building and maintaining the fields.

The high-school soccer team will use them as well as the 525 participants in the association, he said.

Melfi said the new fields will serve two purposes.

He said the association now plays on baseball fields at Tod Park, and it’s too fast of a turnaround from baseball to soccer season to get those fields ready.

“And we want to bring more people to Liberty Park — to bring activities and families there,” he said.
