Toastmasters leader gives book excerpt

Dena DeLuco, president of Toastmasters Executive 480, contributed to the book “Heart of A Toastmaster,” a publication that is by, for and about Toastmasters members.
Sheryl Roush, an author and toastmaster, had called for submissions to the book early in the summer. DeLuco was one of 135 whose submission was accepted.
“Heart of A Toastmaster” has significant meaning for DeLuco. In her chapter, titled “Leadership Through Service,” she writes about a particular member of Executive 408 of which she is a member, a founder of the club.
She said that Alan Deeley, a member for more than 45 years, was a kind and competent leader who taught and mentored by example. When DeLuco wrote the chapter, Deeley was an active member, but June 28, he died.
Lowellville author tackles religion
LOWELLVILLE
In his new book, “The Ball Shell Walls,” Joseph Kantor Higgins of Lowellville examines issues facing religion and Christianity and hopes to shed light on the truth about religion.
The message his book brings is that humans are the miracle and it is we who have to save the planet and mankind.
The author, a member of the United Methodist Church for more than 35 years, served in the Navy and attended San Diego Community College, Arizona State University and Youngstown State University.

Cortland writer delves into history
CORTLAND
“Mud Sock,” a novel by J. Lennington of Cortland, tells the story of Judy Clark Lenning-ton’s father, who grew up in Rogers. It spans from his birth in 1923 to World War II.
Although the stories are factual, the names have been changed. The book includes photos of many historical landmarks that have disappeared.
“Mud Sock” is Lennington’s sixth book. She grew up in the Rogers-Negley area and graduated from Beaver High School.

Spencer narrating audio for kids’ book
NEW YORK
Writing a children’s book isn’t enough for Oscar winner Octavia Spencer. She’s also narrating the audio edition.
Spencer’s “The Case of the Time-Capsule Bandit” comes out Oct. 15. It’s the first of two planned books for middle schoolers that feature 12-year-old vigilante Randi Rhodes. In a statement released Wednesday by publisher Simon & Schuster, Spencer says her background as an actress helped her bring her story “to life” on tape.
The 43-year-old Spencer won an Academy Award in 2012 for best supporting actress for her role in “The Help.”
