Aunt: Slain Dodgers fan was ‘sweet boy’

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The aunt of a 24-year-old Los Angeles Dodgers fan who was stabbed to death during a fight over the Giants-Dodgers rivalry in San Francisco says her nephew would never hurt anyone.

Janet Alvarado told KNBC-TV in Los Angeles that Jonathan Denver was a “gentle, sweet boy.” Speaking from her home in Covina, she called his death senseless and said she had no idea how it happened.

Police say Denver was stabbed by 21-year-old Michael Montgomery around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday several blocks from the Giants stadium after two groups of men exchanged words about the Giants-Dodgers rivalry. Denver had attended the game and was with his father, his brother and two other people.

Montgomery has been arrested on suspicion of homicide. His father, Marty, has said his son acted in self-defense.
