Area residents are invited to participate in a six-week cooking class, “Start Cooking Healthy.”

The class is designed to help families with limited resources learn how to make healthy and affordable meals using common foods. Participants will learn how to select nutritious and low-cost ingredients and prepare them in ways that provide the best nourishment for their families.

Course instructors from Salem Community Hospital’s Food and Nutrition Department will teach cooking skills, practical nutrition information, food label reading and food budgeting strategies for families. At the end of each class, participants will receive groceries to practice making the recipes they’ve learned that day.

The classes will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. each Thursday from Oct. 3 to Nov. 7 in the kitchen at the Salem Memorial Building, 785 E. State St.

The program is sponsored by the United Way Services of Northern Columbiana County, Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley and Salem Community Hospital.

The program cost will be $10 per participant, with $5 returned at the close of the program if the participant attends all six classes. Those who complete the entire six-week program will be eligible for a $50 drawing and will receive kitchen cooking utensils.

Class size is limited to 26 people, and all participants must preregister.

To preregister for the classes or to request information, call the United Way Services of Northern Columbiana County at 330-337-0310.
