Poland Seminary High School inducted seven new members to the Poland Athletic Hall of Fame this year. The induction ceremony took place on Sept. 13 prior to the Poland vs. Boardman football game. This year’s class includes:

Robert “Stubby” Miller (1953)

Miller was a three sport letterman in football, basketball and track. He was a rare four-year letter winner in football. He played linebacker and running back and was a captain his senior year. He also was chosen to the All Tri-County team his senior year. Miller joined the Marine Corps after graduation and served until his untimely death in an auto accident in 1963.

Bob Hulbert (1972)

Hulbert was a three sport letterman in football, baseball and track. He accumulated eight total letters, three in football, two in baseball and three in track. His football accomplishments included All Tri County first team (two years), All Northeastern first team and honorable mention All-State. In addition to his two track letters, Hulbert held the PSHS low hurdles champion record for many years and was All-State during his senior year.

Dave Smercansky (1975)

Smercansky earned three varsity letters during his baseball career and was named captain of the 1975 team. As a pitcher, he complied an 11-2 record during his varsity career recording 109 strikeouts in 102 innings, pitched with a 1.35 ERA. In addition, Smercansky threw a no hitter and four one hitters during his career.

Becky Jasinski (1989)

Jasinski played both softball and soccer. During her freshman year, she was recruited from a girls community soccer team to join the Poland Seminary men’s junior varsity soccer team, primarily as a goalie. On the Bulldog’s varsity softball team, Jasinski served four years as pitcher, supporting the Bulldogs development into a competitive force. Despite joining the varsity squad as a “untested” freshman pitcher, she showed sufficient competence on the mound to letter her freshman year and graduated a four-year letterwoman. Jasinski’s high school pitching career ended with 36 official high school victories including: three no-hitters, four one-hitters, 12 two-hitters and 11 three-hitters. Regular high school season statistics also include 363 strike-outs in 339 innings with a .44 ERA during her junior year and a 1.07 overall high school ERA. As a pitcher, Jasinski was a Mahoning Valley Conference first team pitching selection in both her junior and senior years at Poland.

Dan Scharville (1992)

Scharville was a three year starter for the Bulldogs baseball team. As a catcher, he was selected Honorable Mention All-MVC his junior year. As a senior co-captain, he was selected to the All-MVC First Team. He led Poland to a 17-3 record, MVC Championshi, and Sectional Championship (1992). He batted .406 and had a fielding percentage of .963. As a senior, he was also selected to play in the Mahoning Valley All Star game and received the Matt Hardy Baseball Scholarship.

Scharville was a two-year football starter. As a senior, he made Second Team All MVC. He set the current school record for the longest kickoff return for a touchdown (93 yards).

John Jeren III (2000)

Jeren was a track and field athlete from 1998-2000. He was a three-year letter winner, three-year first team All-Conference, a state qualifier as a junior and senior and All-Ohio in three events as a senior. During his years as a Bulldog, Jeren broke school records in the 4x800 meter relay (7:57.2), the 4x400 meter relay (3:20.43) and the 800-meter run (1:55.86).

His team won the Conference Championship, won the district championship, placed second at the Regional and went on the win the Division II State Track and Field Championship. Jeren was All-Conference again as a senior. At the Northeast Ohio Division II District Meet, Jeren won three events: the 4x800 meter relay (which set a district record), the 800-meter run (which set a school record) and the 4x400 meter relay. At that meet, he broke the 27-year-old 800-meter run school record. Jeren continued to improve that school record throughout the 2000 season by placing second at the regional meet, and placing sixth at the state championship meet and setting the record at 1:55.86. John’s 4x800 meter relay school record still stands.

Andrew Frum (2001)

Frum ran track and cross country from 1997-2001, and was a four year letter winner in both sports. He earned All Ohio honors five times, twice in cross country, 1999 and 2000, and three times in track. He was fifth in the state in cross country in 1999. He was a member of the state championship track team in 2000, and was state runner up in the 3200 meters and 4x800 relay that year. He is a member of the school record holding 4x800 relay team. During his senior year, Jeren was the 2000 regional champion in cross country as well as the 2001 regional champion in the 3200 meters in track. He placed fifth in the state championships in both cross country and the 3200-meters. He also was the team captain of both the cross country and track teams during his senior year. He went on to run track and cross country on a scholarship at Ohio University, where he was a 4 time NCAA Division 1 letterman, and co-captain of the track and cross country teams.
