SALEM
The annual Family Fall Fun Day, sponsored by the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce, will be Saturday in downtown Salem from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The event will include table vendors, free hayrides by Salem firefighters, and a variety of children’s activities, including a Pet Parade, co-sponsored by the Humane Society of Columbiana County.
The pet parade will begin at 1 p.m. in the Penn Avenue parking lot beside Pure Pet. Prizes will be awarded in five categories: best trick, best owner look-alike, best retro costume, best Salem costume and most unique. Participation is free. Registration begins at 12:30 p.m.
Salem Historical Society will offer historical fun as part of Fall Fun Day at Shaffer Library, 239 S. Lundy Ave., from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Because Salem was first settled by members of the Society of Friends (Quakers), Nelda Stanley Hawkins, a representative of the Sixth Street Meeting House (Wilbur Branch), will share history of the group in period costume.
Bonnie Trimble will demonstrate the spinning wheel. John Gilbert, dressed in a Civil War uniform, will share personal experience from the diaries of the soldiers, and Civil War items will be displayed.
A 1923 “doctor’s coupe” Ford, a 1929 rumble-seat Ford, and vintage bicycles will be displayed in the parking lot.
A presentation of the Gettysburg Address will be given at 2 p.m. by Jim Crouse, who will also include history of the Battle of Gettysburg.
In addition, trolley tours of Underground Railroad sites will begin at 10 a.m. and noon. Reservations are encouraged. Call 330-337-6733.
