Boys cross country takes home trophy
Senior Mark Hadley took first overall out of 582 runners Sept. 7 at The Walsh Jesuit Tomahawk Run in Cuyahoga Falls. Hadley’s time of 15:25 was not only the best in the race, but a personal best for the Spartan senior, as well, and set a new course and meet record. The Spartans took home the team trophy, defeating 20 other schools.
“This is a huge victory for our team,” said Boardman head coach John Phillips. “This meet is a district/regional type of meet and to take first speaks very well for where we are at as a team.”
The Spartans varsity now boasts a record of 45-0 on the season. Following Hadley was senior Alan Burns in fourth in a time of 16:34. Senior Justin Maroni was 10th in a time of 16:48; he was followed by sophomore Nathan Hadley in 12th in a time of 16:50. Senior Jacob Kelleck rounded out the scorers for the Spartans in 35th place in a personal best time of 17:23. Kelleck’s effort earned the Spartan senior this week’s BW-3 ‘Runner of the Week’ award.
“We really had a great day,” said Phillips. “We had a ton of dropped times and personal bests, and to do that against some of the best teams in the state is a major step for our younger runners.”
Setting new personal bests at Walsh Jesuit were seniors Hadley and Kelleck, Ryan McKeown (18:28), Kevin McNally (20:35), and Shawn Pregi (20:09). Freshmen setting new bests were Nathaniel Ams (19:06), Nick DiGiacomo (20:46), Dom Eorio (20:09), Josh Jenkins (20:59), and Matt Maroni (20:20).
