YSU tennis team earns three titles on final day

Members of the Youngstown State men’s tennis team competed at the YSU Fall Invitational, winning two Flight singles titles and the doubles crown on Sunday.

Silviu Mistreanu was the winner of Flight A singles, Dawoud Kabli won the title in Flight C singles and Kabli and Sebastian Hagn won the doubles title.

Zeeshan Ismail placed first in the consolation bracket in Flight B.

Mistreanu defeated ASA’s Tim Srkala, 6-3, 6-5.

Kabli beat Saint Francis (Pa.)’s Kyle Korus, 6-3, 6-0.

Hagn and Kabli jumped out a to 5-0 lead on Wright State’s Ricardo Pineda and Dan Gilbert.

Griswold lifts Butler over Creighton in OT

OMAHA, Neb.

Katie Griswold, a member of the Butler soccer team and a graduate of Cardinal Mooney High, scored in overtime of a 1-0 win over Creighton.

Butler is 11-5-2, 4-4 Big East. Creighton is 9-7-1, 2-5-1.

Griswold scored the game-winning goal in the 95th minute off an assist from Kelly Mahoney.

The game-winning goal was a cross pass from Mahoney to Griswold.

The senior found the back of the net from 18 yards. It was her second goal of the season.

Tennis trio honored

The Boardman Tennis Center Junior League selected three players as Player of the Week.

Gavin Blacksher, Jessica Lee and Tim Pallotta were selected by the league.

World Series ratings for Game 3 up 21%

ST. LOUIS

The Cardinals’ wild 5-4 win in Game 3 of the World Series received a 7.4 rating on Fox, up 21 percent from the record low set last year for San Francisco’s 2-0 victory over Detroit.

Saturday night’s game ended on an obstruction call against Boston third baseman Will Middlebrooks.

Nielsen Media Research said Sunday the game received a 14 share and was watched by 12.5 million viewers.

Game 3 last year received a 6.1/11, matching the record low for any Series game — Philadelphia’s rain-delayed 5-4 win over Tampa Bay in the third game in 2008.

The three-game average of 8.1/14 is up 13 percent over the first three games last year.

Ligety takes WCup season-opener race

SOELDEN, Austria

Ted Ligety maintained his dominance in giant slalom by taking the season-opening World Cup race by a 0.79-second winning margin Sunday, while Bode Miller finished 19th upon his return to the circuit following a 20-month injury layoff.

Ligety, who won six of eight races last season and defended his world title in GS, held on to his massive 0.90-second first-run lead to finish in an aggregate 1 minute, 59.50 seconds.

Michael Bradley’s 1st goal in year lifts Roma

MILAN

American midfielder Michael Bradley scored his first goal for Roma in more than a year, a 22-yard right-footed strike in the 82nd minute Sunday that lifted Roma to a 1-0 victory at Udinese for its record-setting ninth straight win at the start of the Serie A soccer season.
