JOSEPH J. VUKOVICH | Time line
Here are some of Judge Joseph J. Vukovich’s career highlights. He will not seek re-election next year to a seat on the 7th District Court of Appeals.
1963: Graduates from Woodrow Wilson High School in Youngstown. Served senior year as student council president.
1968: Earns a bachelor’s degree in political science from Youngstown State University. Spends 1969 and 1970 serving in Vietnam. While there, he takes his law school admissions test.
1973: Earns a law degree from the University of Akron School of Law and goes to work for the Ohio Attorney General’s Office.
1977: Becomes a deputy law director in Youngstown.
1978: Runs for an open Ohio House seat, wins a 12-person Democratic primary and then the general election. He is re-elected to six two-year terms.
1992: Because redistricting puts him in the same district as state Rep. Ronald V. Gerberry, he opts not to seek re-election.
1993: Then-state Sen. Harry Meshel resigns to become the Ohio Democratic Party chairman, leaving his seat vacant. Vukovich is selected by the Senate Democratic Caucus to succeed Meshel.
1994: Elected to a four-year term in the state Senate.
1996: Wins an open seat in the 7th District Court of Appeals with a six-year term and vacates his state Senate seat.
2002: Wins re-election to his judicial seat.
2008: Wins a third six-year term on the court.
2013: Announces he won’t seek a fourth term on the court of appeals.
