Boardman Glenwood Middle School wins fourth consecutive Spartan Bowl

Friday, October 25, 2013

Boardman Glenwood’s football team defeated Boardman Center 14-6 to win their fourth consecutive Spartan Bowl championship.

Boardman Center struck first with a 25-yard touchdown pass on fourth down to take the lead 6-0.

But a BGMS stop on the two-point conversion limited the damage to just six points.

The score remained that way through the third quarter until Boardman Glenwood’s offense began to move the ball on a signature 89-yard drive that tied the game at six on a 16-yard touchdown run by DeCosta Baptiste.

Key plays on the drive included a drive-saving two yard gain by Antonio Page on a fake punt deep in Glenwood territory and a 23-yard pass completion from Page to Holden Lipke to move Glenwood deep into Center territory.

BGMS closed the game out with two minutes to go in the fourth quarter on an 11-yard touchdown run by Page.

The two-point conversion capped the scoring effort with a pass completion from Michael Fetsko to Mitchell Brunko.

The BGMS defense, which made several key stops throughout the game, was led by Stephen Amstutz’s fumble recovery on the last play of the game, and also contributing to the defensive effort were Haider Ali, Evan Walton, Clayton Wehr, John Fleet, Che Trevena and Jacob Kimble.

Boardman Glenwood finishes the season with a 5-3 record.
