1789: President George Washington sets aside this day as one of thanksgiving to observe the adoption of the Constitution of the United States.

1883: Former slave and abolitionist Sojourner Truth dies in Battle Creek, Mich.

1933: A judge in New York decides the James Joyce book “Ulysses” is not obscene and could therefore be published in the United States.

1941: U.S. Secretary of State Cordell Hull delivers a note to Japan’s ambassador to the United States, Kichisaburo Nomura, proposing an agreement for “lasting and extensive peace throughout the Pacific area.” The same day, a Japanese naval task force consisting of six aircraft carriers leaves the Kuril Islands, headed toward Hawaii.

1942: President Roosevelt orders nationwide gasoline rationing, beginning Dec. 1.

1942: The motion picture “Casablanca,” starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman, has its world premiere at the Hollywood Theater in New York.

1943: During World War II, the HMT Rohna, a British transport ship carrying American soldiers, is hit by a German missile off Algeria; 1,138 men are killed.

1949: India adopts a constitution as a republic within the British Commonwealth.

1963: Thieves who may have hidden in the J.C.Penney Co. store at Boardman Plaza when it closed escaped with costume jewelry, clothing and toys valued at $7,500.

Mrs. Catherine Bobovnyk is thrown to the ground and her purse containing $1 snatched by a thief in front of 480 W. Madison Ave.

Youngstown-Warren area factory workers had the second highest earnings on a weekly basis of Ohio’s larger cities in October, earning $123.75 for a 39.5 hour week.

1938: General Fireproofing Co. will call scores of men back to work after Jan. 1 as the result of an award to supply all government departments with steel files and desks during 1939.

Youngstown police radio technician Victor Gettys dies several days after falling 60 feet from a radio tower atop No. 8 Fire Station.

James H. Wilson, commander of Road of Remembrance American Legion Post 472, says Youngstown’s great steel plants are vulnerable to air attacks and urges patriotic organizations to support a Youngstown airport.
