Students in the visual and performing arts program at the Chaney Campus collected four boxes of food and raised about $200 at the Dance to End Hunger earlier this month.

The event, in collaboration with Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley, offered attendees $1 off per ticket to the dance show if they brought a nonperishable food item to the performance.

The food was donated to the food bank. There were three performances — one for the student body, a public performance and a school performance. Chaney students perform jazz, modern, ballet and other forms of dance as part of their studies.

Chaney’s VPA program includes sixth- through 12th-graders who study dance, theater, choral and orchestral music, art and other artistic endeavors in addition to core academic courses.

It’s part of the Youngstown City Schools. This marks the third year for the program. Chaney also houses a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Program for sixth- through 12th-graders.
