1963: President John F. Kennedy is shot to death during a motorcade in Dallas. Gov. John B. Connally, in the same open car as the president, is seriously wounded. A suspect, Lee Harvey Oswald, is arrested.

1988: The Pennsylvania House passes a compromise proposal that appears to meet Gov. Robert P. Casey’s requirements for a law that would legalize small games of chance in the state.
Brian S. Blevins saves himself from death in Ohio’s electric chair by pleading guilty to a reduced murder charge in the stabbing death of Kenmore Drake, a YSU student, in February. Judge William G. Houser sentences Blevins to 15 years to life in prison.
1973: William Sullivan Jr., executive director of the Western Reserve Economic Development Agency, says the energy crisis could cost the Mahoning Valley thousands of jobs, depending on the severity of the winter.
Michigan State Freshman Mike Cobb, who won all-city and all-state acclaim at Youngstown North High School, is the best freshman tight end in the nation, his coaches say.

Myer Collins of 2021 Elm St. is sworn in as clerk of courts, succeeding Richard J. Barrett, 61, who died in St. Elizabeth Hospital three months after surgery for a malignant brain tumor.
William F. Maag Jr., editor and publisher of The Vindicator, is honored by the Youngstown Area Chamber of Commerce at its annual meeting for his civic leadership and service to the community.
1938: Hubbard Village Council passes an ordinance to sell bonds to build a water softening plant for Hubbard that will be built near the present plant north of town.
W. Edgar Leedy, chairman of the Youngstown Metropolitan Housing Authority, favors awarding the contract for the Westlake housing project to a Youngstown contractor if at all possible.
