Quaker City Castings has been cited and fined $45,000 for what the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration said were nine “serious safety and health violations.”
OSHA announced the fines Thursday for the Salem iron and steel foundry on East Euclid Street. The penalties followed a July inspection.
A lack of a hearing conservation program — which exposed workers to dangerously loud noises — unguarded machinery and electrical safety issues were among the violations.
OSHA classifies a serious violation as one that can pose the risk of death or serious injury that the employer knew about or should have known about.
Quaker City also was inspected in March 2006 and cited for five violations, according to an OSHA press release.
The company now has 15 business days from the receipt of its citations and penalties to comply, request an informal conference with OSHA’s area director or contest the findings before an independent OSHA review commission.
