Canfield Board of Education members discussed details of a new evaluation method for its superintendent, Alex G. Geordan.

Also involved in the Wednesday meeting were Ron Iarussi, Mahoning County Educational Services Center super- intendent; and Jim Herrholtz, deputy superintendent.

The evaluation system, developed by the state in 2009, has been in discussion between Geordan and the board since he was hired in August.

It involves more than just reviewing his work.

The system includes five standards the district must adhere to — strategic plan and vision; collaborative communication; policies and governance; instruction; and resources.

A committee within each standard also must be established by the district.

A board member will serve on each committee and act as a liaison.

The district is ahead of the game compared to others that are adopting the new system, Iarussi said.

It already has created a financial advisory committee, which is geared toward pursuing funding for the district.

The district also has established a strategic plan and vision, which the board adopted in April.

“The strategic plan was our initial stage,” Geordan said. “From that, we now have a vision. We now have a rudder to our ship, [and] now we know where we’re going.”

The next step for the board is to adopt a new job description for the superintendent, which it intends to do by July.

By the end of June, the goal is to have established the four remaining committees. And by January, the goal is to have a document approved by the board that will allow the board to formatively assess Geordan.

“It’s a growing process, and if we’re going to hold teaching and classified staff accountable ... principals held accountable with new evaluations, then their educational leader needs to held accountable as well.”
