The Youngstown State Athletic Department announced that 30 former YSU student-athletes and two current Penguins received their degrees this spring.

Of the 32, half graduated with honors.

Among the former Penguins who received their diplomas during ceremonies on May 19 were Jacquline Clonch (Track and Field), Nick DeKraker (Football), Kaitlin Rohrs (Women’s Basketball/Athletic Training Room), Katie Peterlin (Soccer), Casey Hill (Swimming and Diving), Jordan Ingalls (Softball), Tariq Ismail (Men’s Tennis), Melanie Prelec (Track and Field) and Robert Switka (Baseball).

Jackson-Milton tops Fitch 4-1 in softball

Paije Kiraly slammed a three-run, walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning Tuesday to give Jackson-Milton a 4-1 victory over Austintown Fitch in a regular-season softball game.

Both teams are set to play in regional tournaments on Thursday.

Fitch pitcher Alex Franken took a 1-0 lead and a no-hitter into the seventh. The Falcons’ run came on a sixth-inning home run by Cali Mikovich.

But the Bluejays’ Zaina Sahli led off the seventh with a double and scored the tying run when Madison Tomaino reached on an error. Caitlyn Carney then walked and Kiraly homered to win the game for Jackson-Milton (23-8).

Kiraly pitched a three-hitter and struck out 12. The Bluejays will meet North Robinson Colonel Crawford (16-9) in a Division IV regional semifinal at 5 p.m. on Thursday at Kent State University.

Franken took the loss despite allow just two hits. Fitch (20-8) will meet Medina (22-7) in a Division I regional semifinal at 5 p.m. on Thursday at the University of Akron.

At Mercer Raceway Park there will be a tripleheader of Sprint Car racing on Saturday.

Three different classes of Sprint Cars will race that night.

Several members of the GYTOA will work at the 2013 OHSAA Track & Field State Championship.

Working at the state will be Jim Fox, Division 1 Referee; Deb Satterfield, Pole Vault; Jack Betts, Umpire; Andris Balputnis, Announcer; Peggy Celedonia, Long Jump; Lou Brown, Shot Put; Brian Claflin, Umpire and Ed Katzman, Finish Area Coordinator.

Akron Marathon

The Akron Marathon will partner with Panera Bread in its Eat-Live-Run promotion.

Runners can receive an official training program and special registration offer at Panera on June 4–19.

The Akron Marathon will be September 28.

NFL draft to May in 2014; future undecided

NEW YORK

The NFL draft is moving to May next year.

The league officially announced Tuesday that the 2014 edition will be held May 8-10 at Radio City Music Hall because of a scheduling conflict in April at the venue. The NFL has yet to decide on dates for drafts in 2015 and beyond.

Radio City is hosting an Easter show next year that conflicts with the NFL’s typical window for the draft.

Nike cutting ties to Livestrong foundation

AUSTIN, Texas

Nike, which helped build Lance Armstrong’s Livestrong cancer charity into a global brand and introduced its familiar yellow wristband, is cutting ties with the foundation.

The breakup was announced Tuesday by Livestrong officials.

According to Livestrong and Nike, the company will stop making Livestrong apparel after 2013, but will honor the financial terms of their deal until it expires in 2014.
