Protect your plants from frost, freeze damage

Friday, May 24, 2013

CANFIELD — Protection will be needed tonight, and possible Sunday, to protect your annuals, vegetables as well as newly planted perennials and woody shrubs, says Eric Barrett

Ohio State University Extension educator from Mahoning County.

While many plants can sustain these low temperatures, some plants can still be harmed in some way - both in affecting new shoots and blossoms.

Barrett said things to consider as the forecast for night temperatures is below 39 degrees:

  1. Bring pots and baskets into a building, garage or the house if possible.

  2. Do not use plastic. Plastic touching plant material transfers cold to the plant and will freeze plants (burn them).

  3. Use sheets or blankets to cover tender plants outside. Be sure to cover at sunset to hold in heat.

  4. Boxes, buckets, milk jugs (covering, not touching plant), baskets and other items are suitable for plant protection.

  5. Remove any covers/protection during the day to avoid excess heat created from sunlight.
