Boys track team concludes Federal League season

The Boardman boys track team concluded its Federal League schedule with a 93-44 victory over the Canton McKinley Bulldogs May 7. The win improved the Spartans to 5-1 in the Federal League.

The Spartans opened the meet with a victory by junior Mark Hadley, freshman Nathan Hadley, junior Justin Maroni and freshman Adam Deeley in the 4x800 meter relay with a time of 8:35. In the 110-meter hurdles, senior Will Birchfield placed first with a time of 14.6 seconds with junior Jeff Bean in second at 15.6. In the 100-meter dash, Spartan senior Nathan Jones placed second in 10.81 seconds and junior Isaiah Lyle was third at 11.2. The Boardman 4x200 relay team of freshman Brendon Lucas, junior Ivan Adu-Poku, junior Darius Sanders and junior Brian Bodrick took first at a season best 1:33.4.

In the 1600-meter run, junior Alan Burns took first with a time of 4:43. He was followed by Maroni in second at 4:45 and senior Sam Sheronovich in third at 4:46. The Spartans won the 4x100 relay with the team of junior Turel Thompson, Lyle, Bodrick and senior Nathan Jones in a season best 42.9 seconds. Lucas won the 400 with a time of 53.9, Burns was second at 54.0 and sophomore Josh Suarez was third at 54.7. Birchfield placed first in the 300 hurdles at 41.3 seconds and was followed by Bean in second at 41.7.

In the 800-meter run, the Spartans swept the event with Nathan Hadley in first at 2:04, freshman Andrew Gable in second at 2:11, and Maroni in third at 2:12. For the 200-meter dash, Jones finished second in a time of 22.7 seconds and Bodrick was third at 22.9.

The 3200-meter run was won by Mark Hadley in a new BHS record time of 9:15.00, sophomore Nick Long was second at 10:59 and junior Trevor Leyden was third at 11:00.

“This was a very impressive victory,” said Spartan head coach John Phillips. “We have never beaten McKinley this lopsidedly since joining the Federal League - our guys certainly wanted to end their time in the Federal League with a bang.”

In the field events, junior Steve Brown won the pole vault at 12’ with sophomore Andrew Cessna taking second at 8’6”. Thompson placed third in the long jump at 18’10” and Bean was third in the high jump at 5’6”. Senior Chris Riwniak placed first in the shot put at 52’5.5” and junior Mike Sferra was second in disc at 136’.

“It is really a tremendous accomplishment for our team to have a 5-1 season in the Federal League,” said Phillips. “This league is so good and there are so many great athletes and good coaches in it, to have a chance to win the league after the regular season is very special.”
