House panel OKs amendment on visas
WASHINGTON
The U.S. House Appropriations Committee approved an amendment from U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan to place a moratorium on spending money to process any additional visas for Brazilian citizens.
The amendment, approved Wednesday, was introduced because Brazil has a policy of refusing to extradite Brazilian nationals who commit crimes in the United States, said Ryan of Niles, D-13th.
Air Force Reserve Maj. Karl Hoerig of Newton Falls was fatally shot in his home on March 15, 2007, and his wife, Claudia, a Brazilian national who returned to her homeland after the shooting has been charged with murder. The amendment next goes to the U.S. House floor for a vote.
Poland school odor leads to evacuation

Poland Seminary High School was evacuated about 8 a.m. Wednesday after its heating and air-conditioning system picked up an unidentified odor coming from a chemistry lab near the school’s main offices.
Everyone in the building was safely out by about 8:15 a.m., schools Superintendent Don Dailey said. Fire officials deemed it safe about 45 minutes later after they discovered the odor was coming from a drain in the lab that was used to drain several chemicals.
Dailey said that over time the chemicals built up a strong odor. The drain has since been cleaned. Dailey said the chemicals will be moved to a safe storage area that would allow for proper ventilation.
Intruder robs couple

A Jackson Street Southwest couple told police an armed man forced his way into their home about 7:10 a.m. Tuesday.
Police reports said a woman saw someone standing by her side door and thought it might have been a neighbor. When she opened the door a little bit, a man pushed his way inside, holding a handgun and asking where her husband was.
The intruder put the gun to the man’s head and threatened to shoot him, but the woman told the gunman to shoot her instead because she has cancer, police reports said. The man took cash from a wallet that was on a piano and a watch after the man said he did not have a cellphone.
‘Love, Protect’ rally

There will be a “Love and Protect our Children” rally at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at New Bethel Baptist Church, 1507 Hillman St.
The 90-minute rally will feature Minister Kyle Earley from Cleveland, the Youngstown Harambee Youth Dance group and local clergy members.
A ceremony is scheduled to pay tribute to individuals who lost their lives to violence. Those who wish to include a family member’s name in the program can call Lynette at 330-559-6030.
