The Austintown Fitch robotics team, featuring a frisbee-throwing robot, served as the main attraction during Lynn Kirk Elementary’s Family Fun Night April 24.
“It’s always a good time at the Family Fun Night,” said Andy Yantes, a teacher at Fitch and mentor to the robotics team. “We have so much fun with the kids, showing them what we can do with science and engineering. We really want to show that there is a fun side to this and to get kids interesting in being engineers.”
The robotics team capped a successful season by advancing to the semifinals at a Cincinnati robotics competition.
The team must build a new robot for competition each year. This year’s robot was built in six weeks, beginning the first week of January.
The Lynn Kirk PTA donates money earned at the Family Fun Night bake sale and used book sale to the robotics team each year.
“It’s really exciting coming to Lynn Kirk as a high school student on the robotics team,” said Eileen Yantes, a former Lynn Kirk student. “We didn’t have this at fun nights when I was a kid. I like getting the students excited about robotics.”
Other activities at the Family Fun Night included a coloring contest for Lynn Kirk students.
