Pending sales rise

The Ohio Association of Realtors said that the number of single-family homes and condominiums put under agreement in February rose for the 22nd consecutive month compared with the results from the previous year.
Ohio’s February Pending Home Sales Index of 117.6, a forward-looking indicator based on contract signings, rose 12.4 percent from the February 2012 index score of 104.6.
An index of 100 is equal to the average level of contract activity during 2008, which marked the end of five consecutive record years for existing home sales and the onset of the recession.
A pending sale or a sale “under agreement” is when the buyer and seller agree on terms of the sale of a home and have a signed purchase and sale agreement, but have yet to close and be recorded as such.

Giant Eagle announced this month that it has set its largest single daily price reduction, delivering more than $70 million in annual customer savings by lowering prices on more than 3,000 grocery items, or 15 percent of its stock.
The retailer also is strengthening its hunger- relief efforts throughout the communities it serves by donating an additional 500,000 meals to regional food banks. The incremental donation builds on the 5 million meals the company and its suppliers donate annually, making this year Giant Eagle’s largest total food-bank contribution.

Leadership Mahoning Valley is accepting applications for the class of 2013-14 through May 1.
The program was created to identify individuals with diverse backgrounds and experiences who demonstrate leadership talent and community commitment.
Participants complete a 10-month program, which includes an opening retreat in the fall and eight monthly daylong sessions that focus on major community systems such as education, health, human services, government, justice, labor, business, poverty and the quality of life.
The tuition fee of $2,000 covers all program costs, including retreat accommodations and program meals. Selected applicants will be billed for tuition. Applications may be requested by email at lmv@leadershipmv.org.
