The Mahoning County District Board of Health unanimously approved a contract with the county’s Solid Waste Management District to provide inspections of active and closed landfills and other solid- and infectious-waste activities.

For providing services, which includes collecting and analyzing samples from public and private wells on lands within a 1-mile radius of the landfills, the county health board will receive $390,000 from the MCSWD for this year and 2014.

According to the contract, should landfill volumes increase or decrease more than 20 percent during a 12-month period, however, then the amount and scope of duties of the health board may be adjusted by the MCSWD board.

Patricia Sweeney, county health commissioner , thanked the MCSWD for “very willingly and graciously” approving the contract.

In other action at its meeting this week, the health board approved significant increases in fees for camp- program and swimming- pool inspections and licensing, the first increases in 20 years, officials said.

Fees for campgrounds under 50 lots rose from $75 to $145; for campgrounds with 50 or more lots, from $1.50 to $2.50 per lot; for temporary camps, $55 to $219; and for resident day camps from $40 to $142.

Fees for pools, spas and special-use fees were increased from $200 to $315; and for an additional pool, spa or special-use pool, from $75 to $160.
