Pa. medical examiner: Abortion patient's death unresolved until raid

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A medical examiner says he didn’t have the full picture of a woman’s death after a 2009 abortion until the clinic was raided months later.

Assistant Philadelphia Medical Examiner Gary Collins says he initially ruled the overdose death an accident. But he says he changed the cause to homicide after getting the clinic records.

Dr. Kermit Gosnell is charged with third-degree murder in the alleged overdose death of Karnamaya Mongar, a 41-year-old refugee. Prosecutors say he let untrained staff administer lethal drugs to her.

Defense lawyer Jack McMahon has suggested Mongar had pre-existing respiratory problems she never disclosed to Gosnell. McMahon is expected to cross-examine Collins later this afternoon.

Gosnell is also charged with killing seven babies allegedly born alive.

The trial is in its second week and expected to last about two months.
