NEW MIDDLETOWN

The New Middletown Police Department will host an active-shooter training for area law-enforcement agencies from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. today at Springfield Elementary School, 10580 Main St.

Sgt. Kenneth Goist will instruct the class.

He is the department's firearms, and defensive tactics instructor, a school resource officer for Springfield School District and is considered an expert in school safety.

About 45 officers will receive practical training to respond to active threats in schools, churches, hospitals or malls.

The morning session will focus on theory, and the afternoon on active, hands-on scenario training.

New Middletown Mayor Harry Kale and police chief Vince D’Egidio are offering the instruction for free to law enforcement officers.
