Fundraiser set

AUSTINTOWN

The 20/9 Amateur Radio Club has an all-you-can eat spaghetti dinner fundraiser from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday at Austintown Senior Center, 100 Westchester Drive.

The Easter bunny will be there, so you should bring a camera to take pictures.

Dinners are $7 for adults; $6 for seniors 60 and older; and $5 for children age 3 to 11. Dinners also include salad, bread, drinks and dessert. Takeout orders will be available.

There will be an auction and bake sale, with proceeds benefiting the club’s Holiday Food Basket Project, which provides families in need with food baskets during the holiday seasons.

Suspect in robbery

HOWLAND

Township police charged a 22-year-old Vienna man in the Monday night aggravated robbery of the Papa John’s restaurant at 1976 Elm Road NE.

Police Chief Paul Monroe said Robert J. Mealy, 22, of Sunnydale Drive, was arrested at his home Tuesday. Using a search warrant for the car and home, police found items involved in the robbery, Monroe said.

The robber brandished a handgun at 8:50 p.m., ordered the lone restaurant employee to the back, threatened to kill him, and took about $400 from the cash register, Monroe said.

Shooter training

New Middletown

The New Middletown Police department will host an active-shooter training for area law-enforcement agencies from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. today at Springfield Elementary School, 10580 Main St. Sgt. Kenneth Goist will instruct the class. He is the department’s firearms, and defensive tactics instructor, a school resource officer for the Springfield Local School district and is considered an expert in school safety.

About 45 officers will receive practical training to respond to active threats in schools, churches, hospitals or malls. The morning session will focus on theory, and the afternoon on active, hands-on scenario training.

New Middletown Mayor Harry Kale and police chief Vince D’Egidio are offering the instruction for free to law-enforcement officers.

Craft show

BOARDMAN

The Boardman Gridiron Club has its annual Spring Arts and Craft Show from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. today in the Boardman High School gymnasium, 7777 Glenwood Ave.

The free event features crafters and artisans from as far away as Cleveland and Akron. Show organizers expect at least 100 vendors to participate, with products ranging from handcrafted jewelry, fabric purses and hats, doll clothes and accessories, as well as several booths featuring Easter treats and baked goods.

The event features a basket raffle, 50/50 drawings and concessions. High school football players and cheerleaders will be on hand all day to assist vendors and patrons with their goods. Proceeds will benefit the Boardman football and cheerleading programs.
