OHSAA: Separate public, private tournaments won't happen

COLUMBUS — The planned vote on separating public and private high schools in state playoffs is dead.

The Ohio High Athletic Association called off the referendum, which was scheduled for early May.

Ohio schools instead will vote on a new competitive-balance referendum in May.

The separate playoff referendum resulted from a petition submitted in November to the OHSAA by Dave Rice, the superintendent of the Wooster Triway Schools. Rice reportedly agreed on Friday to pull that referendum in favor of a new competitive-balance proposal.

A news conference is expected Columbus this afternoon to discuss today’s developments.
