A man was taken to St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Youngstown with serious injuries Saturday after a two-vehicle accident on state Route 172 in Columbiana County.

Hanover Township Fire Chief Tim Wood said the department responded to the two-car crash near Hanna Drive at 10 a.m.

The department was called to extricate the driver of a Ford Focus who was trapped inside.

Wood said the Focus was heavily damaged as a result of the crash with a Jeep Liberty.

The man was the only occupant of the Focus, and there were two people in the Jeep, he added.

The 11 firefighters at the scene worked alongside the KLG Ambulance emergency crew to extricate the man, and Wood said he was removed from the car within an hour.

He was taken to the ballfields on Hanna Drive near the Ruritan Hall for a medical airlift to Youngstown.

“He was flown less than an hour after the accident, so we did pretty good as far as getting him extricated,” Wood said.

The Winona Fire Department was called to help set up the landing zone.

Wood said the man appeared to be in his 20s. He also said the two people in the Jeep were not treated for injuries at the scene and were not transported to a medical facility.

Additional information, including the man’s identity and cause of the crash, was not available from the Highway Patrol Saturday. State Route 172 was closed to traffic for roughly an hour as a result of the crash.
