AMVETS Post 44 Commander Jan C. Brown of Boardman was named all-state commander for 2013, and AMVETS Post 44 received the Ohio State Community Service Award for its work supporting area veterans and community organizations.

The awards were presented at the recent AMVETS Department of Ohio annual state convention in Cincinnati.

Using $25,000 won in 2012’s Home Depot Foundation’s Facebook contest, Aprons in Action, AMVETS Post 44 made improvements to its post home, had a family Christmas party for the Ohio Army National Guard’s 838th Military Police Co. in Austintown, and provided auction gift baskets for area fundraisers.

Other area AMVETS officials and organizations recognized at the state convention included:

John P. Brown III of Boardman, past AMVETS national commander, was elected to the Department of Ohio Finance Committee.

Connie Schaffer of Columbiana, a nurse at the Youngstown Veterans Affairs Outpatient Clinic, was named Nurse of the Year for her work with area veterans and her efforts putting together a local Women’s Veterans Program.

Paul Speigle of Salem, a member of Sons of AMVETS Post 45 in Salem, was elected state Commander of the Sons of AMVETS for 2013-14.
