Amanda Frost takes fourth in triathlon

Amanda Frost of Columbiana finished first in her age group and fourth overall at the Scales Lake XTERRA Triathlon race.

Frost, completed the half-mile swim, 14-mile mountain bike and 4.5-mile run over the course in a time of 1:56:12 in almost 90 degree heat.

She stated that she felt much improved over her disappointing seventh-place finish in the Southeast Regional Championship in Alabama last month.

Frost was named to compete for Team USA at the International Triathlon Union World Championships this year but she was unable to attend because of injuries.

Kelly Barzak named All-American

CHICAGO, Ill

Kelly Barzak, a graduate of Howland High School and a Thiel College volleyball and basketball standout, has been named to NCSA Athletic Recruiting’s 2013 Athleader All-American Team.

The Athleader All-American Team was chosen based upon nominations received from coaches, sports information directors and athletic directors across the nation.

Only eight athletes were selected as All-American recipients in this the first year the honors have been handed out.

Casi ties for seventh

Alexandra Casi of East Palestine tied for seventh place in the Michigan Womens State Golf Open.

Casi carded rounds of 71-76-69—216 and earned $1,550.

Terlesky wins age group at golf event

LOVELAND, OHIO

Youngstown’s Brian Terlesky finished first in the 15-and-under age group at the Ohio Junior Golf Championship at Oasis Golf Club.

He shot 2-under 70 in both rounds to finish five strokes ahead of Jack Herceg of Dublin (72-73—145).

Terlesky, 13, also tied for fourth in the overall competition (ages 18-under), which was limited to first-round scores due to rain. Cincinnati’s Will Grimmer was first with a 66.

Walcott pleads not guilty in NJ beating

PATERSON, N.J.

A former rookie linebacker for the Cleveland Browns has pleaded not guilty to attempted murder and other charges.

Ausar Walcott was arraigned Thursday in Paterson, N.J. He is accused of punching Derek Jones in the side of the head outside The Palace Gentlemen’s Club in Passaic early Sunday.

A prosecutor says Jones is in a medically induced coma at a New York hospital, where he’s listed in critical condition. The 23-year-old Walcott is being represented by a public defender while he attempts to hire an attorney. He is being held on $500,000 bail.

Vikings sign LB Desmond Bishop

MINNEAPOLIS

The Minnesota Vikings have signed veteran Desmond Bishop to a one-year deal to add much-needed help at linebacker.

The Vikings announced the signing on Thursday. The 28-year-old Bishop is the latest player to come to Minnesota from rival Green Bay, joining the likes of Greg Jennings, Brett Favre, Darren Sharper and Ryan Longwell.

Bishop missed all of last season with an injured hamstring and was cut by the Packers last month. He gives the Vikings a player with experience at middle linebacker, something that was lacking in the current group. Veteran Erin Henderson had moved from outside linebacker to the starting middle linebacker in minicamp.

Former Jets safety Jim Hudson dies at 70

AUSTIN, Texas

Jim Hudson, the former New York Jets safety who helped the team to its only Super Bowl title in 1969, has died. He was 70.

The team confirmed on its official site that Hudson died Tuesday in Austin. The cause of death was not disclosed.

Hudson was a starting safety against the Baltimore Colts, making a key play in the first half of the Super Bowl victory.
