1988: Youngstown city officials say they are not surprised that the Urban Development Action Grant program is being phased out and contend that it is another example of the Reagan Administration’s insensitivity to the needs of Rust Belt cities.

An estimated 340,000 people are expected at the weekend River Regatta in East Liverpool, which will include stern wheelers and an “Anything that Floats” race.

The Youngstown Pride squanders a 19-point lead in a 96-93 loss to Chicago before 1,500 fans at Beeghly Center. Coach Mike Rice says he was partly to blame for allowing his team to try to milk the clock.

1973: Arveta Weber, retiring principal of Coitsville School, is honored by former pupils as he ends a 43-year career as an educator.

1938: Republic Steel Co. will restart four sheet units at its Niles plant, which has been shut down for more than a year. Regional steel output is still at only 28 percent of capacity with 26 of 83 open hearths active.

Youngstown Cadet Patrolman Dan Maggianetti, 36, who was recently honored as the best shot among rookies on the force, is wounded in the right thigh when he falls and his gun discharges during a raid on a dice game at 2905 Shady Run Road.
