President William McKinley's former Poland home to be recognized

The home where President William McKinley once lived is gone but not forgotten.

The site will be dedicated and celebrated as the newest Ohio historical site in Poland at 11 a.m. June 29 at 210 S. Main St. as part of this year’s Celebrate Poland 2013.

McKinley’s home was where the parking lot near Home Savings bank is now located. McKinley and his family moved to Poland in 1852, where he attended the Poland Academy. He was born in Niles.

After McKinley returned home from the Civil War, he studied law in Poland before he moved to Canton.

He was elected a representative to Congress in 1897 and was elected the country’s 25th president in 1896.

“During his time in Poland he developed the character, knowledge, and debating skills that would serve him throughout his life,” Dave Smith, Poland Historical Society member, said.

McKinley was assassinated in Buffalo, N.Y., in 1901 just after he began his second presidential term.

This is the fourth historical marker that has been dedicated in Poland and the 35th in Mahoning County, according to a press release.
