Scrappers have won 10 of last 12 games

ABERDEEN, Md.

Starting pitcher Kenny Mathews pitched three shutout innings and reliever Cole Sulser held Aberdeen to one hit over four innings as the Mahoning Valley Scrappers defeated the IronBirds 3-1 in a New York-Penn League game at Ripken Stadium.

Sulser (2-1), who got the win, struck out two and did not walk a batter. Mathews gave up two hits and struck out three, while Trevor Franks gave up one run over the final two innings to get the save.

Paul Hendrix doubled and drove in a run for the Scrappers (18-24), who have won 10 of 12. Claudio Bautista added an RBI and a stolen base while Martin Cervenka singled and scored.

Steven Brault (1-1) started for Aberdeen (20-21) and gave up two runs in three innings on two hits. Steve Clevenger had two hits for the IronBirds.

Mahoning Valley plays two more games in Aberdeen, then plays three in Connecticut.
