Boardman police chief says shooting investigation nearly complete

Tuesday, July 23, 2013

BOARDMAN — Jack Nichols, township police chief, said the internal investigation of two officers who were put on administrative paid leave after shooting and killing 30-year-old Daniel A. Fitton during a standoff on Cook Avenue on July 3 is nearly complete.

One of the officers, he said, is back to work, but he did not give any names. He said when officers are in a position to kill someone, it takes a mental toll on them. He said there are even times when that officer receives hate emails.

Nichols has been in contact with the officer still on leave and said this officer is “kind of touchy about it.” Once the investigation is complete, Nichols said both names will be released.

He added the department does offer counseling for officers in this situation.
