Robert Stanton, a third-year medicine student from Poland, was recently selected as recipient of the Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED) Schizophrenia Research Scholarship.

Offered by an anonymous donor, this full-tuition, merit-based scholarship was designed for medicine students who are committed to careers in biomedical research focused on the prevention and cure of schizophrenia.

The Schizophrenia Research Scholarship will allow Stanton to complete a year of intensive research between his third and fourth years of medical training, and will pay his tuition for all three years.

It will also allow him to complete an additional degree at the University — a master of science degree in integrated pharmaceutical medicine.

Stanton entered NEOMED as part of the B.S./M.D. program through Youngstown State University.

During his research year, Stanton will serve as a research assistant under Altaf Darvesh, assistant professor of pharmaceutical sciences and psychiatry.

While working in Darvesh’s laboratory, Stanton will focus on developing and characterizing a pre-clinical laboratory model of schizophrenia with particular emphasis on the contribution of oxidative and inflammatory processes in the model. He will be involved in investigating the pharmacological effects of established and novel anti-psychotic agents used for the treatment of schizophrenia.

Besides pre-clinical laboratory investigations, Stanton will be involved in clinical research involving the use of antipsychotic agents with the NEOMED clinical faculty from the Departments of Pharmacy Practice and Psychiatry based at one of the consortium hospitals.

Stanton also will be involved with the research activities of the Best Practices in Schizophrenia Treatment Center at NEOMED.
