1942: The heavy cruiser USS Houston and the Australian light cruiser HMAS Perth are sunk shortly after midnight by Japanese forces during the World War II Battle of Sunda Strait.
1951: The Senate committee headed by Estes Kefauver, D-Tenn., issues an interim report saying at least two major crime syndicates are operating in the U.S.
1972: President Richard M. Nixon and Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai issue the Shanghai Communique, which calls for normalizing relations between their countries, at the conclusion of Nixon’s historic visit to China.
1983: “M-A-S-H” ends after 11 seasons on CBS with a 21/2-hour finale that is watched by an estimated 121.6 million people.

1988: Led by Youngstown Patrolwoman Saundra Bell, a group of Youngstown residents say they are establishing a watchdog group similar to Mothers Against Drunk Drivers who will be monitoring Municipal and Common Pleas courts for purported soft sentences being given to repeat offenders.
1973: Bishop James W. Malone tells the Youngstown Diocesan Board of Education that schools in poor parishes such as St. Patrick in Youngstown and St. Benedict in Canton are the responsibility of the church.
“Baby Jane Doe,” the infant rescued from an airliner toilet at Youngstown Municipal Airport has been released from Warren General Hospital and placed in a foster home, says Craig Neuman Trumbull Children Services executive.
