Trial continues

WARREN

Testimony continued Wednesday in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court in the trial of James M. Plevyak II, 29, of Idylwild Street Northeast, charged with four counts of gross sexual imposition and one count of disseminating matter harmful to juveniles.

If convicted, he could get about 15 years in prison. Presiding over the trial, in which testimony began Tuesday, is Judge W. Wyatt McKay. The charges accuse Plevyak of molesting a 10-year-old boy he was baby-sitting at Pevyak’s home and the boy’s home in Niles.

He is a Tier II registered sex offender because of an earlier conviction, according to the Trumbull County Sheriff’s Office.

Firefighter grant

NILES

The Niles Fire Department received a $37,283 federal grant. The money comes from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency Assistance to Firefighter Grants program.

The money can be used for fire equipment, protective gear, emergency vehicles and training.

“It is important that we make safety of the utmost importance when it comes to the firefighters who put their life on the line every day,” said U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan of Niles, D-13th. “These types of federal grants are important to ensure that local fire departments have adequate funding for the resources they need to keep our community safe.”

Two are arraigned

YOUNGSTOWN

Two people charged with the city’s first homicide of 2013 were arraigned Wednesday before a Mahoning County Common Pleas Court magistrate.

Larry Blue, 32, of Parmelee Avenue, was arraigned on charges of aggravated murder and felonious assault. Khadijah Payden-Briggs, 19, of Maplewood Court, was arraigned on a single charge of aggravated robbery. Blue and Briggs pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Blue is accused of killing 52-year-old David Stokes at an East Side housing development during a reported drug deal gone bad Feb. 1. Perkins-Briggs reportedly assisted in the drug deal, police said. The case has been assigned to Judge John M. Durkin.
