1972: Apollo 17 astronauts Harrison Schmitt and Eugene Cernan conclude their third and final moonwalk and blast off for their rendezvous with the command module.
1975: Six South Moluccan extremists surrender after holding 23 hostages for 12 days on a train near the Dutch town of Beilen.
1981: Israel annexes the Golan Heights, which it had seized from Syria in 1967.
1986: The experimental aircraft Voyager, piloted by Dick Rutan and Jeana Yeager, takes off from Edwards Air Force Base in California on the first nonstop, nonrefueled flight around the world.

1988: Unleashing a flood of campaign spending unprecedented in Ohio politics, Democratic Sen. Howard Metzenbaum and his Republican challenger, George Voinovich, spent a combined $18 million in their fall campaign, reports show.
Warren’s only Catholic high school ends the year $136,000 in debt, and diocesan officials fear the school will continue accumulating debt unless the tuition of $1,765 a year and parish contributions increase.

An out-of-control car strikes and kills a pedestrian and then rams a police cruiser in Greenville, Pa., killing Patrolman Ferdinand Anderson, 37, who leaves six children. The dead pedestrian is Charles H. Wolford, 70.
1938: The Youngstown Builders Association pledges to use qualified local labor in carrying out a $2.3 million contract for the Westlake low-income housing project.
