Youngstown firefighters battle two blazes

youngstown

City firefighters battled two arsons late Sunday evening and early today.

Crews were called to a 211 E. Philadelphia Ave. home on the South Side about 11:40 p.m. Sunday, where the people who live there told them they were watching television on the second floor when someone smelled smoke and when they went to check, they discovered a fire on the porch.

The three people inside jumped out a second story window and crews failed to get inside on their initial attempt, reports said. Instead, a ladder truck had to be called to knock the flames down from above. The occupants of the home said it was firebombed. Damage is listed at just under $20,000, a total loss. One firefighter was slightly injured.

About 1:25 a.m. today fire destroyed a vacant house at 2315 Gaither Ave. Damage there is listed at $7,000. No one was injured.
