Next week, Trumbull County commissioners are expected to approve a new fee structure for dog registrations from $14 per dog to $18 per year.
There also would be an option of getting a three-year registration or lifetime [of the dog] registration.
Gwen Logan, chief executive dog warden for the county dog kennel on Anderson Avenue in Howland, said the multi-year options are mandated by Ohio law and will take effect with the purchase of 2014 dog licenses.
The three-year license costs $54 and the lifetime license costs $180.
Logan said the $18 registration fee is “in line with most counties our size.”
Under Ohio law, every person who owns or keeps a dog more than three months of age must register the dog and pay a registration fee.
Also new for 2014, the kennel will offer euthanasia of dogs for $30 for animals up to 50 pounds and $50 for those 51 pounds and more. That is a lower cost than at most veterinarians, Logan said.
Added to that will be a $20 surrender fee for a dog that has a license, $50 for a dog with no license. It is $5 for puppies three months of age and younger.
Logan said the euthanasia service has been used a great deal by people facing financial difficulties who have elderly dogs with health issues.
The kennel provides microchipping of dogs for $25. A microchip can help a dog owner get a lost dog back more quickly, Logan said.
All animals who are adopted from the kennel are now given a microchip, which raises the adoption fee from $25 to $50 for dogs over three months of age. The adoption fee for dogs under three months is $35.
The cost of redeeming a dog that has been recovered by the dog kennel is $20 for the first day and $10 for every day thereafter. An audit performed for the kennel indicated the cost to the kennel to house a dog is $20.80 per day per dog.
A public hearing was held at the county commissioners meeting Wednesday to tell the public about the kennel’s fees.
The hearing was a requirement under Ohio law for changes in these fees.
