DeWine to propose stricter gun sentences
COLUMBUS
Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine and state Sen. Jim Hughes, R-Columbus, are scheduled to announce legislation today aimed at decreasing violent gun crimes in Ohio.
The Violent Career Criminal Act proposes longer prison sentences for certain repeat offenders convicted of a crime involving a firearm. The bill also would change prison terms for some repeat offenders convicted of gun specifications.
‘Homework Express’ nominated for Emmy

The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has announced that Youngstown State University’s “Homework Express” has been nominated for the 2013 Emmy Award in the Children/ Youth Program/Special category.
The Lower Great Lakes Chapter includes television stations and professional media organizations in Cleveland, Toledo, Indianapolis, Youngstown, Erie and other cities.
The awards will be announced at the 44th Annual Emmy Awards celebration June 1 at Windows on the River in Cleveland.
Host of the awards show is Mike Polk, a Cleveland-based writer and comedian whose Internet videos have garnered more that 60 million views on YouTube alone.
Unity in Community
Youngstown
Warriors Inc. will host its ninth annual Unity in the Community Parade from 10 to 11:30 a.m. May 18.
The parade will begin at Midlothian Boulevard and Market Street and end at the Old South High Field House, 1148 Erie St.
After the parade, a “family and friends” day will be at the field house from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Information from businesses and organizations, entertainment, dancing, a bounce-around, crafts and refreshments will be available at the event.

NE Ohio Safety Ride
AUSTINTOWN
The organization Safe Communities to Increase Motorcycle Safety Awareness will have its eighth annual Northeast Ohio Safety Ride at 10 a.m. May 18 at Harley-Davidson Bike Town, 5700 Interstate Blvd.
Another starting point is the Ashtabula County Fairgrounds, Poplar Street, Jefferson.
Ending point is the Cortland Moose Lodge, 6400 state Route 46 NE, Cortland.
Registration begins at 10 a.m., and the ride begins at 11. Cost is $10 for a single rider in advance, $15 day of the event.
Each passenger costs $5.
