1865: The steamer Sultana explodes on the Mississippi River near Memphis, Tenn., killing more than 1,400 people, mostly freed Union prisoners of war.

1988: The Mahoning Valley Economic Development Agency is attempting to broker a deal between Youngstown city officials and Trumbull County officials to save the proposed $7 million Petro truck plaza in Weathersfield Township.

A Vindicator/YSU poll shows a majority of Republicans and Democrats in Mahoning County support conversion of Mill Creek Park into a countywide metropark.

1973: Mayor Jack C. Hunter and William E. McGarry, United Airlines vice president, announce that United will add a third round-trip daily flight between Youngstown and Chicago beginning in June.

Mayor Jack C. Hunter issues his 11th and 12th vetoes in his 36 months as mayor, rejecting legislation to remove parking meters from Market Street and to reduce the barber’s license fee from $7.50 to $5 annually.

Ninth graders at Princeton Junior High School have new blue choir robes with white collars after raising every penny of the $800 cost of the robes.

1963: Mayor Harry Savasten signs an ordinance that city council passed 4-3 to open the way for individuals or groups to build their own hangars on city property at the Youngstown Municipal Airport.

Republic Steel Corp. will blow in a second blast furnace at its Youngstown Steel Plant, bringing district production to about 76 percent of capacity with 12 blast furnaces, 48 open hearths, a Bessemer plant and a basic oxygen converter in operation.

1938: John W. Bricker, former attorney general of Ohio and so far the lone aspirant for the Republican gubernatorial nomination, arrives in Youngstown for a series of meetings with Republican leaders and party rank and file.

William J. Foster, 61, yard brakeman for the P&LE Railroad, is killed when he falls from a New York Central box car and is run over by its wheels in the Campbell yard.
